Here we’ve compiled our notes from 7 user interviews with Stanford students.
Interviewee 1: Female, senior
Habit awareness
- Can you describe a typical day in terms of your personal resource use? Which activities do you think are the most wasteful?
- Probably food, paper (as in cotton pads and beauty wipes)
- Think good at light resourcefulness, and water
- Personal lights on 24/7 (string lights) — too lazy to turn of even when sleeping
- Do you/what steps do you currently take to manage waste, water, and energy use in your home?
- Lights usually keep on at home all the time, roommate turns off so starter doing it oo
- How do you think your daily habits impact the environment on a larger scale?
- Can be better at sorting her waste
Challenges
- What types of waste do you find most challenging or confusing to manage properly?
- At Stanford, do you feel like you know which bin to put things in?
- Compost vs. landfill
- Recycles is easy
- Usually don’t sort in own room (too lazy to get trash bags, so just throws everything into one bag)
- What do you think prevents you from making more sustainable choices?
- Being lazy
- i.e. Need easier access to bags
- Would you be open to adopting a more sustainable lifestyle?
- Yes, would like to be able to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle
- if she were to be able to see the impact of actions in a real world setting would probably motivate her
- Uses other productivity app that she likes like growing a tree, or see metrics (i.e. saved this much waste, which saved dolphin)
Perception of Waste Amounts
- Tie into lo-fi prototype: can you guess how many gallons of water do you use when taking a shower? When washing your hands? When using the toilet?
- 2 galloons of water? definitely not 2

Interviewee 2: Female, frosh
Habit awareness
- Can you describe a typical day in terms of your personal resource use? Which activities do you think are the most wasteful?
- Too much food in dining halls, hard to gauge how much she can eat, but have been trying to be better about it
- Random amazon things that end up throwing away — bubble wrap
- Do you/what steps do you currently take to manage waste, water, and energy use in your home?
- Try to correctly sort trash
- Trying to better gauge personal needs — gauge would how much food will make you full
- Donate clothes more rather than throwing it away
